Within the European COST 356 Action the KOMAG Centre realizes, under the auspices of the Mayor of Gliwice, Prof. Zygmunt Frankiewicz, a research project focused on activities aiming at a definition of transport of sustainable impact on environment. The measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 dust concentration in Gliwice are included in the project. They will be taken in the vicinity of the main roads of high traffic intensity in the city centre and in the areas of good ventilation conditions.
Breathing tests, carried out according to the criteria of the Polish Association of Lung Diseases, will accompany the measurements of dust concentration. The tests will be preceded by the information action. People with diagnosed breathing disorders will have a medical consultation.
The KOMAG Centre, in collaboration with some specialists from the Warsaw University of Technology and the Military Medical Institute, will start the tests in September 2008. It is planned to perform cost free exhalation tests (spirometry), which enable an early diagnosis of bronchopathy such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) or asthma. COPD develops in a very tricky way. Its first symptoms, such as: cough, coughing up and shortness of breath after physical effort, are ignored. Every fifth person suffers from this disease both in Poland and in the world. It is mainly caused by smoking and by air pollution as well. Its early diagnosing gives a chance to suppress its development.
Development of a tool, which supports a decision-making process and a process of transport impact assessment and transport infrastructure impact on the environment, both at the stage of planning as well as at the stage of after-realization analysis, will be the final project results. This tool, in a form of index, will enable a determination of transport impact on air quality in cities as well as on health condition of citizens.
The project becomes an inherent part of the activities conducted within the European Week of Sustainable Mobility, which will be held from 16th till 22nd September 2008. The leitmotiv of this event is “Clean Air for Everyone”.
