The ceremonial Symposium will commemorate the centennial of mining research in the United States, formalized by the creation of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, aim of which was prevention against accidents in the mining industry. Scientists, researchers and representatives of the mining industry from all over the world will participate in the Symposium. The presentations will reflect the historical development of activities aimed at an improvement of safety in mines technology. Experts from eight countries, in which the mining industry is of economical importance, are invited to the Symposium in Phoenix.

KOMAG’s representatives will present the paper on “Innovative Solutions Developed at KOMAG to Improve Operational Safety and Reliability of Mechatronic Systems in Mines”. Examples of designs, which refer to man – machine – environment relationship will be given. A part of the presentation will concern a collaboration between KOMAG and the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in the domain of dust control. The authors of the paper will draw attention to innovative solutions of machines and equipment for underground mining and mechanical processing of minerals, developed at KOMAG, as well as to some systems of control, diagnostics and monitoring, which contribute to an improvement of work safety in mines. The paper will emphasise the role of laboratory tests as well as operational tests in that process. Some information on the main legal regulations, which are in force in the  Polish mining industry, will end the presentation.
