Activity of the  Laboratory of Material Engineering and Environment includes research projects and tests in the field of material engineering, environment engineering and safe use of products.

Testing the toys safety
For conformity with the requirements of the standard harmonized with  z 2009/48/EC Directive (Toys Safety Directive) as well as the following standards: PN-EN 71-1, PN-EN 71-2, PN-EN 71-3, PN-EN 71-8, PN-EN 62115.

Testing the surfaces and playground equipment
Tests according to the following standards: PN-EN 1176-1, PN-EN 1176-2, PN-EN 1176-3, PN-EN 1176-5, PN-EN 1176-6, PN-EN 1176-10, PN-EN 1176-11, PN-EN 1177.

Testing the wheeled child conveyances
Our laboratory is the only testing organization in Poland that offers accredited tests in a full scope of wheeled child conveyances such as prams, baby strollers and double strollers. The tests are realized according to the requirements of PN-EN 1888:2012 “Child care articles. Wheeled child conveyances. Safety requirements and test methods"

Testing the toxic substances in child articles 
in toys, books and  school supplies, soothers, cutlery, feeding and drinking equipment, child care articles, wheeled child conveyances, bicycles, baby walking frames, reclined cradles, baby carries as well as safety barriers and others.

Testing the safety of use of children’s articles
Children’s articles sold on the European market should be tested to confirm their conformity with the safety requirements specified in the standards harmonized with  Directive No. 2001/95/EC.

Testing the global migration from plastics and plastic products intended to come into contact with food
The tests are realized according to standards form PN-EN 1186 group, with use of model liquids.

Material tests
Analysis of chemical composition of steel and cast iron products to verify material grade, to measure hardness and thickness of metal products, to determine surface roughness and thickness of protective coatings as well as assessment of resistance to corrosion of metal products and protective coatings.

Testing the electric and electronic equipment for conformity with RoHS Directive
According to RoHS 2011/65/EU Directive use of the following toxic substances in electric and electronic equipment is restricted: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium as well as polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).

Testing the barbeques burning solid fuels and firelighters for barbequing

Barbeques and firelighters sold on the European market should be tested to confirm their conformity with the requirements of  PN-EN 1860-1,3,4 standards harmonized with the Directive No. 2001/95/EC

Testing the resistance to light and impact of atmosphere

The Laboratory offers tests in environment engineering according to the requirements of PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018-02 Management System. In this scope the Laboratory offers analyses of physical-and-chemical properties of industrial wastes, including mining wastes, as regards possibility of using the wastes in the power industry or as aggregates for road construction as well as of their impact on environment.

The Laboratory takes part in research activities of the Polish Testing Laboratories Club POLLAB, including the Division of Materials Testing, the Division of Machines, Equipment and Transportation Means as well as POLLAB-CHEM/EURACHEM-PL Division. Specialists from the Laboratory take part in activities of Toy Safety Forum and Committee No 237 on Babies and Toddlers Articles and Toys Safety. They organize trainings on safe use of toys, including trainings within branch fairs organized every year.

Accredited material tests of steel and cast-iron products and protective coatings, carried out by the Laboratory of Material Engineering and Environment, include:
  • analysis of chemical composition of steel and cast-iron products as regards verification of material quality,
  • hardness and thickness measurements of metal materials,
  • roughness and thickness measurements of protective coatings,
  • assessment of resistance to corrosion of metal materials and protective coatings.   

The offer for accredited non-destructive tests, carried out by the Laboratory of Material Engineering and Environment, includes:
  • identification of presence of surface and under-surface discontinuities (defects) in metal products using visual and magnetic-and-powder methods,
  • assessment of manufacture quality of welded joints using visual and magnetic-and-powder methods,
  • assessment of product’s surface condition and verification of marking and dimensions,
  • determination of loss in diameter, ovality and deflection of rectilinearity of pins,
  • measurement of thicknesses of sheets and braces,
  • determination of corrosion loss of sheets and welded joints.
Non-destructive tests are conducted according to the requirements of PN-EN 473:2002 Standard by the certified personnel, having the competence certificates of the 2nd degree as regards visual, magnetic-and-powder and ultrasonic methods, issued by the Office of Technical Inspection.  

Within the Accreditation No. AB 910 the Laboratory of Material Engineering and Environment offers the safety tests of toys for conformity with the requirements of the standards harmonized with 88/378/EWG Directive (Toy Directive), including:

  • PN-EN 71-1 “Safety of toys. Part 1. Mechanical and physical properties”,
  • PN-EN 71-2 “Safety of toys. Part 2. Flammability”,
  • PN-EN 71-3 “Safety of toys. Migration of certain elements”,
  • PN-EN 71-8 “Safety of toys. Part 8. Swings, slides and similar activating toys for indoor and outdoor domestic use”.

The offer for the safety tests of toys is directed to, among others, manufacturers, importers and distributors who commercialize toys.

Tests of toys include:

  • tests of mechanical and physical properties:
-    size of small toys or components,
-    torque test, tension test, tip over test, compression test and soaking test,
-    drop test, impact test,
-    accessibility of toy’s part or component,  
-    sharpness of edges and points,
-    flexibility of wires,
-    percentage of material expansion in x, y and z directions,
-    leakage of liquid-filled toys,
-    geometrical shape of certain toys,
-    durability of mouth-actuated toys,
-    strength of folding or sliding mechanisms,
-    thickness and electric resistivity of cords,
-    static and dynamic strength and stability of toys intended to bear the mass of a child,
-    kinetic energy of projectiles as well as bows and arrows,
-    thickness of plastic sheeting,
-    brake performance,
-    strength of toy scooters steering tubes,
-    level of emission acoustic pressure corrected by A and C frequency characteristic,
-    peak level of emission acoustic pressure corrected by C frequency characteristic,
-    speed of electrically driven ride-on toys,  
-    rise of temperature,
-    support and durability of toy chest lids,
-    size of small balls and suction cups,
-    size of figurines,
-    condition of packaging,
-    assessment of marking, warnings and instructions.
  • tests of flammability
  • tests of migration of certain elements: chrome (Cr), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb), barium (Ba) and lead (Pb).  

Certificate of conformity with the harmonized standards is granted on the basis of toy safety test results.

The Laboratory of Material Engineering and Environment conducts tests according to the Quality Management System, meeting the requirements of PN-EN ISO 9001:2001 Standard, certified by the Polish Centre for Testing and Certification, J.S.C.

The scope of tests is as follows:

  • chemical constitution of steel and cast iron products, using the methods of atomic, emission spectrometry and absorption in the infrared,
  • resistance to corrosion of metals and protective coatings, using the accelerated method in the atmosphere of salt mist,
  • hardness of metal products, using Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers and VCI methods.

The Management System according to PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005, implemented in the Laboratory guarantees reliability, credibility and quality of performed material tests and a confidentiality of obtained results.

Replying to the market demand, the following activities are under development:

  • non-destructive tests using visual, magnetic and powder as well as ultrasonic methods,
  • quality tests of protective coatings,

which are connected with quality tests of materials within the scope, among others:

  • quality conformity assessments of steel and cast iron products with material certificates,
  • determination of steel and cast iron grade,
  • assessments of coating quality, including a degree of their corrosive damage.

The Laboratory also conducts research and development projects and performs tests in the domain of environmental engineering and safe use of products.

The scope of offered tests includes:

  • an analysis of physical and chemical constitution of industrial wastes, water and sewage, including a determination of heavy metals,
  • testing of waste susceptibility to washing out,
  • testing of a product usage safety (acc. to 88/378/EWG Directive) incorporating, among others, mechanical and physical properties, flammability and a migration of elements.

The Laboratory personnel's qualifications are verified during their regular participation in inter-laboratory comparative tests, organized by the members of the POLLAB Club of Polish Laboratories within the framework of the agreement with the Polish Centre for Accreditation. The Laboratory takes an active part in testing and research activities of the Division of Material Tests, the Division of Environmental Protection and of the Divisions: Machines, Equipment and Means of Transport.
